Fantastic standard zoom for the money. November 7, 2008 This lens is the best kit lens on the market right now, and likely best standard zoom under $300. It has no obvious flaws, takes sharp pictures, and has fantastic image stabilization. I can take 1/10 shutter speed and even the occasional 1/4 with sharp results. Build quality is not like a $500 lens, but this was designed for the Rebel series. It seems to have a similar quality and finish to my Rebel XS and I don't think it feels "cheap". There are more detailed reviews and tests elsewhere on the internet, so I won't spout off for 2 pages. But, the bottom line is that this is a great lens, especially for the money, and will serve you well for general photography. If you need a longer zoom too, I would recommend the canon 55-250 IS to mate with this lens.
Good improvment on old kit lens October 28, 2008 I've owned the old 18-55 non-IS and this new IS version. I purchased it when I first bought my 40D. You can't beat the bang for the buck for this new version, and the lens gives you a nice wide angle zoom range. On the downside, the lens can feel a bit in build, and has noticeable distortion at 18mm. The next step up with this zoom range and IS is the 17-85IS which is at least $300 more than this lens so this is a good bargain! For anyone who has owned the older non-IS version of this lens, let me assure you that it is a nice step up!
MUY BUENO October 24, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Good bvut not the best October 3, 2008 I bought this lens to replace a damaged Canon EF-S 18-55mm without image stabilizer. The new product is o.k. but still has some problems at maximum range, for instance at 18mm or 55mm. It is hard to get a 'gentle' setting at these ranges. Otherwise this lens is very handy and gives you the freedom to have a high definition camera set with low weight and small space in your bag. I can recommend the lens.
Great lens with great improvements September 22, 2008 I purchased this lens for my Canon Digital Rebel XT. I opted not to purchase the original kit lens due to the bad reviews. However recently I took another look and I decided to purchase this lens based on the improvements Canon made. It was definitely worth the wait!
It's made a huge difference in the color and clarity of my photographs. The colors are gorgeous, great contrast, and very sharp. The Image Stabilization is awesome. Shooting in very low light, without a tripod is a breeze now. I haven't noticed any distortion even in bright sunlight. The lens body is made of plastic, but that makes it nice and light in my view - not too heavy to pack around.
This lens is definitely not of professional quality, as the price would indicate, but for the amateur photographer or someone on a budget this is a great lens. If you're willing to shop around, you can even find it for around $100!
