Product Description Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens offers the highest possible optical quality with no change in aperture over the full focal range of the lens. This allows photographers to set exposure at the widest aperture and zoom all the way through to 200mm without having to decrease shutter speed. Developed for use with a Canon SLR camera, this autofocus telephoto zoom lens offers optimized use with the Canon EOS series digital cameras. Of particular note, Canon has introduced an image stabilizer (IS) that adjusts to meet the demands of professional photography. IS reduces dramatically the image blur caused by camera shake. Gyro sensors detect unwanted vibrations, triggering the corresponding movement of a correcting lens group perpendicular to the optical axis. This alters the light path, returning the image to its correct position on the sensor or film plane. For shooting immobile subjects, Mode 1 corrects for movement in the image along both the horizontal and vertical axes. For shooting while panning horizontally to follow a moving subject, Mode 2 turns off vertical correction and prevents the effect of dragging the subject back through the frame. The lens' Ring-type USM employs ultra-sonic frequency vibrations to drive auto focus with unrivalled speed and near-silent operation. A powerful CPU and improved AF algorithm contribute to speed performance. The EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM includes distance metering information, providing compatibility with the E-TTL II flash system of late model cameras such as the EOS-1D Mark II, EOS-1Ds Mark II, EOS 5D and EOS 400D. When used in conjunction with Canon's range of EX Speedlite flash units, the lens passes distance information to the flash algorithm for markedly improved flash exposure metering. Includes Lens hood and soft pouch

Other details include an f/4 maximum aperture, a ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM) that enables quick and quiet autofocusing, compatibility with circular polarizing filters, and a lightweight body. Great Lens November 30, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I spent a lot of time doing research trying to decide which zoom lens to get and decided to spend the extra money for this one and the results have been well worth it, very fast, accurate auto-focus, IS works very well, Image quality is superb. This has been regarded as one of Canon's best lenses. I'm using it with my 30D
Super SHARP & AMAZING Image Quality November 28, 2008 I am a pet photographer and absolutely adore this lens. It is significantly smaller and lighter than the 70-200 f2.8 IS, which is very important to me, and many argue that the image quality is far superior. I opted to forego the extra stops for the portability, and since I use this lens for shooting in natural light, highly doubt I will miss them. I owned the 70-200 f4 NON IS before this lens, but think this version is far superior in both image quality, and functionality. I use both a 20D and 40D, with 10-22, 50 1.4, 85 1.8, 100 2.8 Macro, 24-105 f4 IS, and this 70-200 f4 IS, and feel it is probably THE sharpest lens I own. I highly recommend it!
Nice carry-around zoom telephoto, good for shaky hands November 28, 2008 I upgraded to this lens from the non-IS version of the 70-200mm as I was having problems getting sharp shots not affected by hand shake. The lens is rather long and heavy and the image stabilization comes in quite handy, especially with shots under low light conditions when you don't want to raise the ISO too high to compensate. The IS can generally get you 2 stops more light than what you might ordinarily expect before experiencing hand shake blur.
Images from this lens are very nice - sharp and good color, good bokeh at the wider apertures so you get nice separation between subject and background. I took this lens to the zoo once and got lots of good shots with it, I've been very pleased with its performance.
I use this lens on a full-frame camera, so keep in mind that if you are buying this for a camera with a cropped sensor, the actual focal range is more like a 110-320mm.
MUST GET LENS November 21, 2008
The reviews of this lens are superb, so I won't re-hash. The lens itself is Canons BEST lens ever made, based on cost vs. performance. If you are serious about photography, and if your budget permits, this is a MUST have lens. It is as sharp at 200mm, as my [...] 200mm f2.0 IS... yes, the f2.0 is 2 stops faster, but requires a tripod as its so damn heavy and long. Considering its zoom range, relatively light weight and compact size (considering its fl and zoom range), this lens is truly a breakthrough in lens technology. At $900 it is clearly a bargain in the photo world.... Here are a few pix to show just how sharp this lens is...all hand-held on 50d [...]
WOW November 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I went back and fourth for weeks between this and the f2.8 IS and finally settled on this one. Mainly because of the price, though i have read this version is slightly sharper(i have not tried the F2.8). Build quality is GREAT. IS is a bit noisy but not annoying. Images from this lens "pop". If you've been thinking about getting this lens, as nike says, JUST DO IT. you will NOT be dissapointed.
