Minor things, but good stuff. January 6, 2009 I have to say, I was on the fence about this one or the ASUS 8.9" netbook. This one was a gift for me for Christmas, so it's still in the evaluation phase. But here's what I can tell you:
- The touchpad is sensitive. I still have yet to get used to all of the functions associated with it... sometimes it's ready to scroll, sometimes it isn't. And one time it zoomed in, though I'm still puzzled on that one.
- The fan does turn on often, and usually stays on for a while. It isn't as loud as some would make it out to be, but it's noticable. (Put it this way... you should be fine in a classroom, but iffy in a library.)
- It IS a dust magnet... unavoidable really.
Good news is that it is very portable, very fast for the processor speed, and has a very clear screen. The on board speakers can get pretty loud. And I like the 2 different SD card reader bays; I actually wanted to take this with me when I go photographing, so it's a big help to be able to view the pics immediately before I leave the site. Also, the battery will keep it running for a long time; somewhere between 5 and 8 hours depending. (I have my brightness down low and screen rez dumbed down a little to save on juice.)
I can't really complain; this thing was mainly my alternative to a kindle. I wanted to get that, but I found out that the Kindle doesn't handle PDFs very well... so I figured for the same $$$ I might as well get a laptop.
So I'm still keeping an eye out for any bumps along the way, but so far it's a handy little machine.
We like it January 6, 2009 We are not computer gurus. We bought this for our daughter because it is small and easy to transport. It suits those needs perfectly. We also liked the fact that it uses XP as an operating system, since we've never heard anything good about Vista. The 6-cell battery seems to provide about 5 hours of use. I may have had a hard time adjusting to the keyboard, but she is young and flexible enough that she had no trouble at all.
ACER-ONE January 6, 2009 Good product. Crook procedures The product comes from the factory with its own case. In 2 out of 3 orders, this original case was taken out of the package because I decided to accept their offer and bought under separate order a carrying case for which I paid $ 25 additional/each I am expecting Amazon.com or whomever is resposible, to send me the carrying case that was supposed to come included in the original package with the notebook.
acer aspire. good value January 6, 2009 I was worried the screen size would hurt my eyes. You actually get used to it very quickly and the size becomes normal for you. I was actually very surprised this machine can load and play games (I have downloaded several games 10 - 100 MB) with no problem at all. Spending the few x-tra bucks on the 1 GB RAM probably made a difference here. There are sometimes online glitches. For example, sometimes the Explorer screen wigs out and the image gets really big (the g in google fills the whole screan) or really small (the whole webpage goes into one square inch in the upper left corner). Also, sometimes the internet takes awhile to load. Seems to occur mostly when surfing to a new page which has to load. It's like it bogs down for no reason... even with a very strong signal. All this is pretty weird, but only happens every so often. Closing Explorer and starting over has always solved it. The battery is awesome. My son played video games on two flights with a layover (cheap babysitter... bad parent).
I shopped a lot before buying. This looked like the best speed, memory, and battery for your buck in a netbook. It has become me and my son's favorite technology/media in the house.
battery clip remover January 6, 2009 i was very amazed with what the netbook can do. however, when i was taking out the battery, the sliding clip snapped and was removed. i was able to put it back, but i am afraid that any time from now, it would snap out again.
